The Table That Wasn't There

Installed in a zinc-clad steel and aluminum house, the primary coffee table in the living room wanted to (ostensibly) float. The challenge was to work with the deflection properties of a clear-sealed custom patinated 1″ thick aluminum plate material to provide discrete surfaces for the differentiated objects that would be placed upon it. The table was shop assembled and, at 485 pounds, required the labor of four men to carry it up one flight from grade yet in place it seems to almost levitate.
